Christmas

Finally this Christmas quilt is finished. I can't believe it is April. Yikes. It turned out to be very challenging to finish.

Piecing the quilt was easy. I came up with a very fast method for cutting coin strips and I wanted them to look slightly off (similar to Denyse Schmidt's work) so I cut them all askew.

Interspersed them with solid whites.

The challenge came with the quilting. This was a queen sized quilt- my biggest quilt yet. I knew I would have problems actually quilting it, so I decided to quilt it in two large sections.

That worked well. I was able to quilt it with much more precision.

The problem was in reattaching the two pieces. This was done with much difficulty and is far to hard to describe.

In the end though she loves it and that is what I wanted. She did show it to her friend who did not like it. I guess when my mom showed it to her- she didn't say a word. Not every one's cup of tea that is for sure.

I think it is beautiful. What did you do for the back?

I'm tackling a queen sized quilt next and I think as long as I keep the batting to low loft or medium loft, I should be ok. Attaching two sections sounds absolutely frightening!

Stunning work, as usual.

Your mom's friend didn't like the quilt? Wow. I'm very surprised. I mean, even if she didn't realize her friend's daughter had made it for her, it's still a beautiful piece. Oh well. Not everyone's cup of tea, as you said.

STUNNING!

Well I totally love it!

I admire you for quilting that beast -- I hate quilting and I'm terrible at it. I'm a piece-it-and-send-it-out-for-quilting gal.

You *do* inspire me, though... perhaps the next one? We'll see.

I love it!! The colors and randomness of the strips is awesome! Your mom's friend is crazy. :)

Yes, it is April...and you reminded me that I need to finish my dad's Christmas present...a scrapbook of pictures of my life revolving around my sweet dad. It turned out to be such a huge project, mostly because I am slower than snot and put way too much time and thought into every dang thing. It's ending up being a big journal/scrapbook/letter/etc. sort of thing. It'll be sweet when it's finished...now to getting it finished! ;)

Speaking of finished, I finished my lotus embroidery. It's posted in my blog. Tell me what you think!

What a lovely quilt! I love the yellow.

I was recommended Marti Mitchell's Machine Quilting in Sections book, and her method is such a piece of cake. I would never dream of attempting to quilt a large quilt in one piece now.

I really love this quilt. The yellows are so cheery and so perfectly matched. It is a beast, though. Did you seriously do it with your crazy machine that you have to use the presser foot with your knee, or do you have another machine?

I had to come back and tell you that I've been thinking about this quilt since you posted it. I didn't like the one is Denyse Schmidt's book but this one is just awesome. I've been working on a similar one in a baby quilt ever since. I have never really liked yellow tones much but I've been hankering after my own yellow quilt since this one.

Can I ask... what was your "fast method for cutting coin strips" ? I'm thinking about doing a coin quilt and easy or fast would be good!
